Sophia Ross Eckert (she/her) is a Canadian-American writer, editor, and educator. She holds an MFA in Fiction from George Mason University, where she served as the editor-in-chief for phoebe, an international literary journal, and taught several sections of writing and literature at the undergraduate level. In Spring of 2024, her service to the program was recognized through the Outstanding Graduate Student Award.
Sophia began her career in the nonprofit space, first at the Canadian chapter of the Global Leadership Network, and then at Image Journal, before pursuing roles in higher education. Most recently, she served as the Coordinator for Consultant Education and Development in the Writing Center at George Mason University. She also served as the Field Placement Coordinator for the School of Education at Seattle Pacific University, where she helped to coordinate the School of Education’s inaugural Diversity, Equity and Inclusion conference for K-12 educators, entitled “The Intersection of Anti-Racism and Trauma-Informed Practices.” In November of 2020, she was voted the university’s “Staff Member of the Month” as a result of her dedication to the undergraduate and graduate students she supported throughout the pandemic.
As a fiction writer, Sophia has been a finalist in four literary contests, including the Pinch Fiction Award, the Ruminate William Van Dyke Short Story Prize, and the Room Short Fiction Award. Her short story “Sister Water” is forthcoming in The Santa Clara Review in February 2025. In October 2018, she was awarded a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Banff, Alberta, and in February 2025, she will attend a three-week residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont on a partial fellowship. She is currently at work on her debut novel, Covenant, based on her MFA thesis.
Sophia lives in Ottawa, Ontario with her husband, Thomas Eckert, and their corgi, Winona.
